This thesis is based on research carried out in State Islamic Senior High School of Purworejo. The purpose of this study was to describe students’ motivation of State Islamic Senior High School of Purworejo in learning English in the academic year 2012/2013, to describe teachers’ teaching style of State Islamic Senior High School of Purworejo and to describe teachers’ teaching styles which mostly effective enhancing students’ motivation in learning English. This research is a classroom observation that performed on the class XI IPS 3 and class XI IPS Keagamaan 2, State Islamic Senior High School of Purworejo. Based on the identification of issues that have been conducted by researchers of the students of class XI IPS Keagamaan 2, Teachers who have a traditional teaching style will less motivate their students. Most of students will be bored in their class. Teachers who present interactive teaching style will be more motivated their students. Moreover, to be succeed in English, students need to have strong motivation in learning English. Thus researchers here doing this research was conducted in two basic form of research that is qualitative and quantitative research. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and observation. The results showed that students are more motivated by student centered teaching methods rather than teacher centered. This is proved by students’ responses towards the teachers whether they are more active or passive than theirs teacher and it also proved by 100% of respondents are in class XI IPS 3 and there are 60% of respondents in class XI IPS Keagamaan 2 stated student centered is effective to enhance students’ motivation in learning English and they preferred teaching style of teachers using student centered. This means that in both classes are more motivated to learn English with a student centered method. Key word: students’ motivation, progressive teacher, traditional teacher
