The Effectiveness of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) in Teaching Reading Comprehension at the Eleventh Grade Students of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo in Academic Year of 2012 / 2013. Thesis, English Department, The Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences, Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. Consultant: Sudar, M.Pd. The thesis is intended to describe the effectiveness of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) in teaching reading comprehension at Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic year of 2012 / 2013. In this research, there are two questions to be answered. There are 1) is the use of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) effective in improving students’ skill in reading comprehension at the eleventh grade students of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo? 2) Does Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) give a positive contribution towards to the students’ skill in reading comprehension at the eleventh grade students of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo? This research was conducted in the eleventh grade students’ of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013. The sample were the eleventh grade students of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo with the number of 64 students. They were taken by using purposive random sampling. A test as the instrument is used to collect the data. The objective of conducting the try out test is to measure the validity, reliability, discrimination power and level of difficulty of the test. The test found of the 25 items were valid. Then the valid items were used for the pre-test and post-test of reading comprehension item tests in experimental and control class. The result of this research revealed that using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) is effective to improve students’ skill in reading comprehension. It was proved that the result of t-value is 4.77, and based on the critical value of t-table by using the 5% (0.05) significance level, the value of t-table is 2.000. it means that t-value is higher than t-table (4.77 > 2.000). The mean of pre-test is 72.75, and the mean of post-test is 77.34. It means that the mean of post-test is higher than the mean of pre-test. Moreover, using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) as method of teaching to improve students’ reading skill in reading comprehension of Vocational Senior High School of Pembaharuan Purworejo in the academic year of 2012/2013 is effective. It showed that using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) on the teaching learning process gives a positive contribution towards the students’ skill in reading comprehension. The result of research finding proved that the Hypothesis of research (Ha) is accepted. The researcher suggests to English teacher to apply Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) as teaching method on teaching-learning process. Keywords: Effectiveness, STAD, Reading Comprehension
