Consultant: Tusino, M.Pd.B.I The objectives of the study are to know the students’ understanding parts of speech, to know the comprehending reading ability, and to find out whether or not there is a positive and significant correlation between their understanding parts of speech and comprehending reading ability. The study type of this research is correlation study. Correlation study is one part of ex-post facto study because the researcher does not manipulate the data. The researcher took 48 students among the population of 190 students in the second grade students of SMP N 36 Purworejo in academic year of 2012/2013 as my samples of my research. The instrument of this research is test; researcher got the data using understanding parts of speech test and reading comprehension test. Then, the researcher calculates both manually and by using SPSS version 16. Based on the computation, the researcher found three things. First, the mean of students’ understanding parts of speech test was 66.67, and it was categorized as good. Second, the mean of students’ ability in comprehending reading was 68.54 and it was categorized as good. Third, there is a positive and significant correlation between their understanding parts of speech and comprehending reading ability, the test score was 0.294. The finding shown above can be proved from the amount of samples (N=48) and the level significance 5%, the result of computation done both manually and by SPSS is 0.294.
