Perception can be categorized as one of man is psychological features. In teaching-learning process, it can be as the learning guide for the students. Perception has roles in creating the students’ expectation of learning English. The expectation will not be reached by the students since they encounter difficulties in learning English. This study is concerned with the perceptions of the students in learning English, the difficulties that the students encounter, and the learning strategies of the first grade of X3 students of State Senior High School 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2012/2013. There are 10 students taken by the researcher as the research subjects. The data of the study are collected using the interview. Analysis of the data is done descriptively using a descriptive type of research. The discussion revealed that most of students perceive that English is important for them because it can be used in their future. The learning difficulties that the students faced are grammar and tenses. There were many vocabularies in English that also make learning English difficult for students. Asking for friends and teacher’ help are as the learning strategy that the students used to overcome their difficulty. Knowing the result of the research, the researcher may have suggestion to the English teacher to understand what difficulties in learning English that their students faced by applying the best teaching method which is appropriate with the teaching-learning situation. The students should be active in every chances of learning activity that allocated by the teacher. Key words: Perception, Teaching-Learning, Learning Difficulty, Learning Strategy
