Consultant: Ismawati Ike N,S.S, M.Hum Keywords:implementation, index cards, improve, vocabulary mastery, students of SMP The objective of this research is to describe the implementation of index cards to improve vocabulary mastery of the seventh gradestudent of SMP N 22 Purworejo. The type of thesis is classroom observation research. The research is conducted to obtain information related to the use of index cards to improve vocabulary mastery of the students of SMP N 22 Purworejo. The researcher took 32 students of SMP N 22 Purworejo as the subject. Before the English teacher taught the students by using the index cards, the researcher conducted the observation, test and interview with the English teacher and the students. The researcher identified that the teacher usually used the index cards to improve the vocabulary mastery. The researcher finds the data by observing the student and the teacher in the classroom, and interviewing the teacher and the students. The researcher also did the test to support whether index cards is improve the students vocabulary mastery. For the interview and the observation, the researcher used camera digital. The researcher as the observer worked collaboratively with the teacher. The conclusion for this research is that the index cards is improving the students vocabulary mastery. It means that the index cards method is very successfully implemented. The students stated that index cards could help them improve vocabulary mastery, because there were new words that can be caught, and they found the meaning or the context through the interesting way such as index cards. This means that index cards is meaningful to improve the students vocabulary mastery
