Writing in English is one of language skills in learning English that must be mastered by students. Writing in English is not an easy assignment done by most of students because English is their foreign language. Most of foreign language learners face difficulties in learning English. It also means in learning writing skill. The difficulties cause the problems encountered by the students. Clustering technique is one of the techniques to teach the students’ English writing skill. It is a way to get ideas to write about something and write them in circle or bubble, around the topic. It is interesting and challenging for the students to write English using clustering technique. The students can improve their writing skill because they write anything they want and they can express their mind, thought, idea, or feeling. The aim of this research is to know whether there is any effectiveness of using clustering technique in teaching writing skill of report text to the eleventh grade of the state Islamic high school Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013. In this research, the researcher took 62 students of the eleventh grade of state Islamic high school Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013 as the sample. The researcher conducted pre-test and post-test. The researcher uses clustering technique to teach writing skill of report text. Statically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test. The result of the research shows that teaching writing skill of report text using clustering technique is effective and gives a positive contribution toward the students’ writing skill of report text to the eleventh grade of state Islamic high school Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013. Since it was found that the result of the t-value is 5.58. Based on the 0.05 significance level, the value of the t-table is 2.00. The computation shows that the t-value is higher than t-table that is 5.58>2.00. Keyword: the effectiveness, clustering technique, writing skill, report text
