Keywords: Effectiveness, Jigsaw Technique, improve, Reading, Recount Text, Ability. Reading is one the four language skills that are very important in learning English. If their reading skill is poor they are very likely to fail in their study or at least they will have difficulty in making progress. If the teacher could take an appropriate technique in teaching reading, it would help the students to read in effective way. One of teaching technique that can be used of reading is Jigsaw Technique. The objective of this research is to find out whether jigsaw technique is effective to improve students’ Ability in reading recount text on the first grade students at MAN Purworejo in the academic years 2012/2013. The researcher took 66 students as the sample; there were experimental group and control group. For the experimental group, the researcher used class X.9, which consists of 33 students. Meanwhile, as the control group, the researcher took 33 students of class X.8. Then, the researcher gave pre-test and post test to both classes. The researcher taught recount text by using jigsaw technique to the experimental group and common way to the control group. The researcher then statically analyzed the data by using t-test polled variance. After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that teaching recount text by using jigsaw technique is effective to improve students’ Ability. As the fact, the result of t-value is 2.347. Based on the 0.05 significant level, the value of t-table is 2, 00. The result of computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table, that is 2.347>2.00. Another fact shows that jigsaw technique is effective shown by mean of experimental group that is higher than the mean of control group. In the experimental group, the mean is 72.88 and it can be categorized as good. In contrary, the mean of control group is 69.18. Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted; it means that Jigsaw technique is effective to improve students’ Ability in reading recount text on the first grade students at MAN Purworejo in the academic year of 2012/2013. The researcher suggest for English teacher to apply Jigsaw Technique as teaching method on teaching-learning process.
