Key words: Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy, Effectiveness, VocabularyMastery Teaching vocabulary is not only teaching new words, but also includes the choice of the words. It is because many words have multiple meanings and serve different functions in different sentences, texts, and even conversations. In fact, the requirements of effective teaching and learning English vocabulary are not adequately met. The result, the students are low in the vocabulary mastery and they are lazy to follow this lesson in the classroom. According to the fact, there are many problems faced in learning vocabulary. Based on the statement above, the purpose of this study is to find out whether Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) is effective or not to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade students. This research is an experimental study. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP N 33 Purworejo in the academic year of 2012/2013. Population of this research is 231 students. Sample of this research is two classes which are divided into control (VII F, 33 students) and experimental group (VII C, 33 students). To collect the data, the researcher used tests as the instrument. There were pre-test and post-test. Pre-test is conducted before the researcher gives a treatment to the students. Post-test is conducted after the researcher gives a treatment to the students. There are 20 items in the test and the type is a matching test. After analyzing the data, the researcher concluded that teaching vocabulary by using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. As the fact, the result of t-value is 3.67. Based on the 0.05 significant levels, the value of t-table is 2.03. The result of computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table, that is 3.67>2.03.Another fact shows that the strategy used is effective. It shown by the mean of experimental group that is higherthan the mean of control group. In the experimental group (using VSS), the mean is 76.06. On the contrary, the mean of control group (using conventional teaching method) is 65.15. Based on the result finding, the researcher concluded that the use Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the Eighth grade of SMP N 33 Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013 is effective. It can be shown that the students’ vocabulary mastery improved.
