Key words: Influence, Picture Series, Writing Ability, Recount text In this research, the researcher wants to find out the effectiveness of using picture series to improve students’ writing ability in recount text. Here the researcher has a question to be answered. That is, is there any effectiveness of using picture series at the eight-grade students of SMP N 33 Purworejo in the academic years of 2011/2012 on their writing ability? The study is called experimental research. The population of this research is the eight-grade students of SMP N 33 Purworejo in the academic year of 2011/2012. Population of this research is 218 students. Sample of this research is two classes which are divided into control group (VIIIA, 32 students) and experimental group (VIIIB, 32 students). The result of the research found that the use picture series as media is effective to improve the students’ writing ability in recount text. The computation of t test shows that the Ha is accepted. It can be proven by the value of t-test. Compared to the value of t-table (2.35>2.00). The highest score from the whole score – both control and experimental, and both pre and post test, was 85. The highest score was gotten by the student in experimental group after he gets the treatment. Then, the lowest score was 50. The lowest score was gotten by the student in control group. After the test, the average scores were found that the pre test mean of the experimental group was 57.03, and the experimental has Mean score 66.88 in post test. Moreover, the mean pre test of the control group was 60.63, while the post test of control group has Mean score 61.88. If the value of t test is higher that t table, the alternative hypothesis can be stated that the use of picture series as media to improve students’ writing ability in recount text at the eight-grade students of SMP N 33 Purworejo in the academic year of 2011/2012 is effective. Based on the result finding, it can be concluded that the data presented is effective of using picture series towards students’ writing ability in recount text. The researcher hopes that the result of this study will be useful for students, teacher and other researcher who ever involve in education field. The teacher should improve their competencies by improving their material mastery, making use of appropriate and interesting media, so, their students’ English ability will increases.
