English is one of the international la g any people in the world. Most of source information including book, nglish. In teaching learning process, one factor that contributes to the success of reading comprehensions might be related to the teaching technique used by the teacher. For this reason, the researcher attempts to presents her work reveling on the ways to teach English reading comprehension in Senior high School. This study is aimed to find out whether teaching using Directed Reading Thinking Activity Strategy is effective to improve students’ ability in finding main idea meaning at the eleventh grade students of MAN Kutowinangun in the academic year 2012/2013.The type of the research is experimental research that is done sear s the eleventh grade students of MAN Kutowinangun in the academic year 2012/2013. The mental group (class XI.IPS1, 29 students) and control group (class XI.IPS4, 29 students). The and ata statistic analyzed by using t-test. vity Strategy is effective to improve the students’ ability to find main idea and word meaning. After getting enough d, the mean scores were found that the pre-test of experimental group was 65.67, and the post-test of of pre-test of control group he r rcher concluded that the students of experimental group have good on their reading ability. by the value of est is 2.4967 than t-table, the alternative hypothesis can be stated that it is effective to using directed dea ord meaning among the eleventh grade students of MAN Kutowinangun in the academic To improve the quality of teaching learning process and to get satisfactory rche gest the English teacher use suitable strategy, especially using DRTA strategy when reading ew text so that the students’ ability of reading comprehension can be improved.
