A Thesis. English Department, The Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Science, Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. Consultant : Semi Sukarni M,Pd. As foreign Language, English is not an Esay Language to learn. English has four important skills. One of the most difficult is writing. Mind mapping is a technique that may be appropriate to be used. By using mind mapping technique help the students in writing from descriptive text given by teacher. Besides, the students will get new experience in learning writing and they will not feel bored. Based on that statement, the objective of this research is to find out whether teaching using mind mapping technique is effective to develop writing ability at tenth grade students of SMA Widya Kutoarjo in academic year 2012/2013 or not. In this research the researcher took 60 students as the sample. As the experimental group, the researcher used class X2 which consists of 30 students. Meanwhile, as the control group, the researcher took 30 students of class X1. Then, the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both classes.the researcher taught descriptive text by using mind mapping technique to experimental group and common way to the control group. The writer then statistically analyzed the data by using t-test polled variance. After analized the data, the researcher concludes that teaching descriptive text using mind mapping technique is effective. As the fact, the result of t-value is 1.16.based on the 0.05 significant level, the value of t-table is 1.88. the result of computation shows that t-value is lower than t-table, that is 1.16
